A framework for residual-based stabilization of incompressible finite elasticity: Stabilized formulations and methods for linear triangles and tetrahedra

چکیده
A new Variational Multiscale framework for finite strain incompressible elasticity is presented. Significant contributions in this work are: (i) a systematic derivation of multiscale formulations that include the classical F method as a particular subclass, (ii) an error estimation procedure for nonlinear elasticity that emanates naturally from within the present multiscale framework, and (iii) robust performance of linear triangular and tetrahedral elements for modeling nearly incompressible materials in the finite strain range. When viewed from the Variational Multiscale perspective, the classical F method is shown to include only a volumetric or diagonal fine-scale deformation gradient while the proposed formulation includes the full spectrum of inter-scale coupling effects. Also, the error estimation procedure readily carries over from developments conducted for small strain linear problems. The formulation is presented first in the context of displacement-based methods and then extended to more general mixed methods accommodating arbitrary combinations of displacement–pressure interpolations. An extensive set of benchmark problems is investigated to show the performance of the method for a variety of hyperelastic materials exhibiting incompressible response. 2013 Elsevier B.V. On finite element formulations for nearly incompressible linear elasticity
In this paper we present a mixed stabilized finite element formulation that does not lock and also does not exhibit unphysical oscillations near the incompressible limit. The new mixed formulation is based on a multiscale variational principle and is presented in two different forms. In the first form the displacement field is decomposed into two scales, coarse-scale and fine-scale, and the fin...
متن کاملExplicit mixed strain-displacement finite elements for compressible and quasi-incompressible elasticity and plasticity
This paper presents an explicit mixed finite element formulation to address compressible and quasi-incompressible problems in elasticity and plasticity. This implies that the numerical solution only involves diagonal systems of equations. The formulation uses independent and equal interpolation of displacements and strains, stabilized by variational subscales (VMS). A displacement sub-scale is ...

We discuss the stabilized finite element computation of unsteady incompressible flows, with emphasis on the space-time formulations, iterative solution techniques and implementations on the massively parallel architectures such as the Connection Machines. The stabilization technique employed in this paper is the Galerkinjleast-squares (GLS) method. The Deformable-Spatial-DomainjStabilized-Space...
متن کاملNearly Incompressible Linear Elasticity Using Simplicial Meshes
We present two finite element methods for simplicial meshes to approximate the solution of the problem of nearly incompressible elasticity. Although both approaches are based on mixed formulations of linear elastic equations and biorthogonal systems, one of them is nonsymmetric, and the other symmetric. An interesting feature of both approaches is that displacement-based formulations can be obt...
متن کاملA Stabilized Mixed Finite Element Method for Finite Elasticity Formulation for Linear Displacement and Pressure Interpolation
A stabilized mixed finite element method for finite elasticity is presented. The method circumvents the fulfillment of the Ladyzenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi condition by adding mesh-dependent terms, which are functions of the residuals of the Euler-Lagrange equations, to the usual Galerkin method. The weak form and the linearized weak form are presented in terms of the reference and current configura...
